Lady Cards Make Tournament; Determined to Prove Naysayers Wrong

The William Jewell College softball team earned a spot in this year’s Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship Tournament.  The tournament bracket was announced by the GLVC league office this past Sunday.

The Cardinals will enter the tournament as the eighth seed and will take on top seed and No. 5 ranked Southern Indiana. The Lady Cards split the regular season meeting with Southern Indiana back in March falling 8-0 in the first game and winning the second game 7-6. The Cardinals play Thursday at EastSide Centre in East Peoria, Illinois, with a game start time of 10:00 a.m.

Madelynne Greenstreet, Sophomore Outfielder/Pitcher, said that it feels great to have earned a spot in the tournament and to have had all of their hard-work pay off.

“We worked so hard over the fall and before season for this tournament.  We have really grown and matured together as a team,” Greenstreet said, “We are a super young team, but you can see a difference in our maturity from the first practice to now and I think it has helped us so much.”

According to the GLVC preseason polls, the Cardinals were not picked to make it into the tournament this year.  However, the Cardinals overcame those predictions.

“Appearing in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship Tournament is a great feeling, especially because we were not chosen to make it this far in the preseason polls,” Cheyenne Carpenter, Junior Pitcher, said, “I think our team really used that as motivation to get where we are at now. I am very proud of each and every girl on the team for their hard word and dedication we have put in to get us this far.”

With the preseason polls in the back of their mind, the Cardinals pushed on and made it their goal to make it into the conference tournament, in which they accomplished.

“At the beginning of the year, our team set a goal to make it to the conference tournament. We treated each practice as if it were a game and really focused on the fundamentals of softball. Not only that but our team chemistry really got us to where we are today,” Ashlyn Sutton, Freshman Infielder, said.

Making the tournament is a fresh start for the Cardinals. When it comes to tournament play, it is truly anyone’s game, whether the team is an 8th seed or a 1st seed.

“Going into the tournament feels like a fresh start. Everyone is right back to a 0-0 record and we are all championship material,” Carpenter said.

Greenstreet said that their team is also looking to improve and take a step farther than their performance last season, in which they fell short in the conference tournament. The Lady Cards are looking to shock the GLVC and make some noise in the tournament.

“We have to compete at our level, take each game one at a time, and work together as a team. If we do that, then we have a great chance of winning the tournament. We have beaten every team that has made it in the top 8, so I have no doubt that we will do well this weekend,” Sutton said.

This is the Cardinal’s 4th ever appearance in the tournament. This year the Lady Cards put together a 25-25 record, 14-14 in conference. Games at home played in their favor as they posted a 14-6 record at home.  On the other hand while playing on the road they recorded a 7-13 away record.  In a neutral setting they managed a 4-6 record. As a team this season, they hit .279, scoring 3.88 runs per game while their bullpen had a combined earned run average of 3.50.
